Between our podcast and our blog, we discussed and covered a whole range of topics in 2023, ranging from strictly Drupal-related ones, to AI & other tech trends, as well as business, leadership and personal development.

We just published a recap of our favorite podcast takeaways from 2023 at the end of the year, and we decided to kick off 2024 with a brief overview of a selection of the top 5 articles we published last year. We hope you enjoy (re)discovering them!

1. Essential skills for the new digital era

While this article was originally published at the end of 2021, it was high time for an update, particularly due to the recent rise in popularity of generative AI led by ChatGPT which prompted a lot of discussion around the impact on individuals jobs and businesses as a whole, which naturally included inevitable changes in the skills required to thrive in this new AI-driven tech reality.

2. Outsourcing Drupal development

The next article from 2023 that we wanted to highlight was our guide to outsourcing Drupal development, a topic that we’ve discussed and written about on several occasions in different contexts, but never before as such a concise guide. It was divided into 3 key sections:

  • When you should outsource Drupal development, with a breakdown of 7 typical scenarios
  • What you should consider when choosing the right Drupal development agency, further divided into general and Drupal-specific considerations
  • How you should go about choosing the right partnership model, with breakdowns of staff/team augmentation, dedicated teams & managed services.

3. How to onboard the next generation of Drupal engineers

To continue with another Drupal-related article, the DrupalCon presentation from our development director Bostjan about the importance of onboarding the next generation of Drupal developers gained a lot of traction and sparked a lot of discussions in the community, especially since a lot of prominent community members, such as Alex Moreno and Dries Buytaert himself, have also been highlighting this recently.

4. The benefits of open-source contribution for businesses

Giving back to an open-source software project that you frequently use and likely get a lot of value from is not just a nice thing to do, but basically a moral obligation – and, as we’ve also already written about, you don’t need to be a developer if you want to contribute to open source projects. In this article, we broke down 5 strategic reasons for contributing to open source, from a business point of view:

  • Giving back;
  • Recognition and market visibility;
  • Ability to present and gain recognition at events;
  • Being up-to-date and versed with latest project developments/features;
  • Having team members who are overall more capable and experienced.

5. AgileFall: The pitfall of doing agile with a waterfall mindset

Last but not least, another one of our popular articles from 2023 broke down the concept of agilefall (i.e. the practice of doing performative agile while maintaining a waterfall mindset and processes) and its two related concepts, agile theater and agile cultness.

As was emphasized in several of our podcast conversations as well as by our managing director Iztok, the mindset is the key for real agile, and embracing change is an essential component of this agile mindset.
