Europe is in the middle of a profound structural shift: digital sovereignty, open-source adoption, and government digital transformation are converging. This is a unique opportunity for Drupal to establish itself as the go-to open-source platform for EU government institutions, already being used in flagship projects such as Data Europa.
With the first-ever Drupal EU Government Day, taking place on 29 January 2026 during the EU Open Source Week 2026, we have the chance to tap into this opportunity.
Supported by the European Commission, the event is intended for EU policymakers, public sector leaders and technology experts responsible for government digital transformation initiatives. It will feature a selection of speakers sharing their first-hand insights on how Drupal and open source are already transforming EU government services.
The public EC support signals a strong strategic direction. It’s clear that EU government institutions want interoperability and openness across member states, using a technology that can both bring immediate value and serve as a future-proof digital foundation.
Drupal’s open-source nature, ecosystem maturity, focus on security and accessibility, and strong multilingual capabilities make it a robust and scalable platform for government digital transformation. This is exactly what Drupal EU Government Day 2026 will showcase.
But it isn’t just an opportunity for EU policymakers and technology decision makers to learn about the power of Drupal, or for Drupal to claim its position as the ideal fit for government website development.
It’s also perfectly aligned with another major priority of the Drupal project – the need to make Drupal relevant beyond its own bubble. Drupal-specific events like DrupalCons and DrupalCamps are one of the best ways to showcase new developments and maintain community momentum, but we also need more events that are focused outwards.
Namely, we need events for people and organizations not yet using Drupal that have a need for high-end, scalable digital experiences. Since EU government institutions and policymakers perfectly fit this profile, the first Drupal EU Government Day will be instrumental in expanding Drupal’s reach within a sector which needs exactly what Drupal delivers.
The event organization team definitely deserves a lot of praise and recognition. As I’ve highlighted, this is exactly the kind of momentum that Drupal needs, and the great selection of speakers and session topics will allow it to get the most out of this momentum. Check out the agenda on the official event website.
An important thing to note is that this is not going to be a mass event, but a high-level, curated gathering specially designed for the profiles I mentioned above, i.e. public sector digital leaders and EU policymakers. Attendance is free of charge, but the number of seats is limited, so you should register now if you're planning to attend.
I’ll be there together with our CEO Iztok. Working on a 6-year EU government project at Agiledrop, we also have a lot of our own first-hand experience of using Drupal for critical EU government services, and so we’re looking forward to joining the conversation and exchanging insights.
Building on the momentum from the conference, we will be organizing a webinar to discuss key takeaways from the event together with broader insights on implementing Drupal and open source in government.
The webinar will take place as a panel discussion two weeks after the event in Brussels, on Thursday, 12 February 2026, at 14:00 CET. I will be doing the moderating alongside two great panelists:
- Stefan Morcov, CEO at Hermix, a company that helps businesses win public sector projects with the help of AI. He will share market intelligence and data trends on EU public contracts.
- Sachiko Muto, Chair at Open Forum Europe and Board Member at Drupal Association. She will be delivering the keynote address at Drupal EU Government, and will share critical insights about the role of open source software in the future of the EU at our webinar.
If you won’t be able to attend the original event, the webinar will be a great chance to still take part in the momentum shift happening within the Drupal for government space.
So, we hope to see you in Brussels in January, or at our webinar later in February – or, optimally, both. Together with amazee.io, we’ll also be hosting a small post-conference social event in Brussels after the official program concludes. If you’re in Brussels during that time, either at the Drupal EU Government event or the broader Open Source Week, you’re warmly invited to join as well.
See you there!
