The promise of AI is causing a surge of new AI tools and integrations of AI into existing popular tools. Lately it’s been difficult to find a software product that does not offer some kind of invaluable AI capabilities.
One of the first big platforms to start tapping into the potential of AI was the open source content management system Drupal. Having just celebrated its 25th birthday in January, Drupal is a long-standing industry leader leveraged in key sectors like government and higher education.
As Drupal’s founder Dries Buytaert pointed out, certain architectural decisions made during this 25-year long journey, specifically in the breaking Drupal 8, have inadvertently made Drupal perfectly positioned for the AI era.
Namely, Drupal’s streamlined API support (i.e. for REST, JSON:API, and GraphQL), excellent API documentation, robust configuration management system, well-defined workflows, and an overall platform modernization support a very high level of orchestration, allowing AI agents to perform much more meaningful and deeper tasks.
To capitalize on this unique position and accelerate AI innovation in Drupal, the strategic Drupal AI Initiative was launched in June 2025. As of October 2025, a total of 1 million dollars had been raised in funding for the initiative. According to Dries, this was the greatest fundraising effort in the entire history of Drupal.
In December 2025, the inaugural Drupal AI Summit was held in Paris, France as part of the FOST conference. Intended primarily for end customers and users, the event was a huge success, with a dedicated audience consisting of AI specialists and enthusiasts, as well as attendees from the broader conference that hadn’t previously worked with Drupal but were interested in its AI potential.
Building on the momentum of the first-ever Drupal AI Summit, we can expect more AI-focused Drupal events going into 2026. Starting later in January, the European Commission’s Drupal Community of Practice is organizing a Drupal AI Hackathon, which will take place on January 27-28 in the EC’s premises in Brussels.
This hackathon is a unique opportunity for unlocking digital innovation in the EU public sector. Designers, developers and other digital professionals from across Europe will get to help shape the future of Europe’s open web and its public digital services by building open solutions based on Drupal and AI in two different challenges.
The first challenge is titled AI Agents for Content Creators. Participants will need to build a proof of concept to demonstrate how AI agents can help with more efficient editorial workflows in Drupal, with a focus on automation, responsible data management, and a showcase of human-in-the-loop collaboration of AI within Drupal.
The second challenge is more design-oriented, focusing on no-code site building with the new Drupal Canvas visual page builder. The goal of this challenge will be to explore the potential of AI-powered design assistance to additionally streamline the creation of digital experience with Canvas. Features such as accessibility and natural language will be prioritized here.
Anyone interested in either of the two challenges is encouraged to register online and attend the online kickoff meeting on Thursday, January 22, where participants will get briefed and teams for the hackathon will be formed. We will definitely be participating in at least one of the challenges, so we hope to see you and innovate together in-person in Brussels!
But the Drupal AI Hackathon is not the only important Drupal event taking place in Brussels that week. Our Managing Director Iztok and our Head of Client Services Ales will also be attending the first-ever Drupal EU Government Day on January 29, where the main area of discussion will be the broader potential of Drupal for EU public sector institutions.
Together with our friends at amazee.io, Agiledrop will also be hosting a casual social gathering after the end of the official program at Drupal EU Gov Day, taking place at the nearby Ginette Bar at 18:15 CET (local time).
Additionally, to capitalize on this momentum and bring people who won’t be able to attend the Drupal EU Gov Day into the conversation, we will also be hosting an online panel discussion about unlocking EU public sector opportunities with Drupal and open source. Moderated by our Head of Client Services, the discussion will feature two great panelists:
- Stefan Morcov, CEO at Hermix, a company helping companies win public sector projects with the help of AI.
- Sachiko Muto, Chair at Open Forum Europe and Board Member at Drupal Association, who will also be delivering the keynote address at the Drupal EU Government Day event.
The discussion will take place in webinar format on Thursday, February 12, at 14:00 CET. For registration and additional information, check the event on LinkedIn.
We hope to see you at any of the events in Brussels, as well as our webinar in February. Let’s exchange our insights and ideas to help shape the future of Drupal and the open web in the EU!
