- Lengthy approval processes with many hand-offs (all of which represent points of friction where bottlenecks are most likely to occur); this can also be a technology issue, since these approval processes are often integrated into the company’s internal systems, and so their limitations stem from issues inherent to the technology.
- Generally poor company culture and team spirit: optimal collaboration is hindered at companies who don’t empower their employees and/or on teams with a poor team spirit.
- Agilefall / agile theater: when companies haphazardly introduce agile elements into waterfall processes, it’s more likely to cause friction rather than actually minimize bottlenecks, which is one of the main reasons to implement agile practices in the first place.
Technology
- Legacy / outdated technology that involves custom workarounds, lengthy integrations, costly and time-consuming upgrades, or rigid workflows and processes;
- Key tooling that is not user-friendly, which hinders adoption, participation and productivity, while also often representing friction between developers and project managers (e.g. many developers cite JIRA as the tool they least enjoy working with);
- Security risks and vulnerabilities, which are an even bigger threat now with AI. This is often a problem associated with software vulnerabilitis related to outdated technology, but it can also be a cultural issue, i.e. if employees are not tech savvy enough or properly familiarized with the evolving cyber security threats.
Market
- Budget restrictions and changes: due to current economic uncertainty, budgets can be very limited – or, worse yet, they might shrink while projects are still ongoing, which necessitates scope changes, or even risks the project falling through.
- Pressure to innovate: the AI explosion has ushered in a new wave of innovation, with many busineses rushing to tap into the vast potential of this new technology.
- Resistance to change: on the flip side, there may be resistance to the changes entailed by this technology innovation. This kind of mindset is often embedded in the culture of a company, making this a cultural issue as well.
How to deal with bottlenecks
Effectively dealing with bottlenecks involves two different approaches: taking preemptive measures to prevent bottlenecks as much as possible, and having proper mechanisms in place to spot, diagnose and fix bottlenecks if they do occur.
Proactive approaches to minimize bottlenecks
We can further divide these proactive approaches into two separate categories, corresponding to the culture and technology issues that lead to bottlenecks which we discussed earlier.
A supportive company culture which prioritizes the developer experience is a prerequisite for ensuring the right tooling gets easily adopted to streamline the development workflow. Communication should be efficient, with both synchronous and asynchronous communication channels to ensure optimal collaboration and alignment.
Making learning one of the core values also helps with adoption of new technologies. This includes not only upskilling/training for particular technologies, but also crucially security training to minimize the risks of human error when dealing with cyber threats.
The technology stack itself needs to be robust and carefully selected, with longevity and ease of future integration as important priorities. It goes without saying that the key software used should be regularly updated to ensure optimal performance and continued security. Most importantly, the tools need to be user-friendly in order to maximize adoption while minimizing friction.
Diagnosing and resolving bottlenecks
In order to have a good overview over all your tools and processes, good data management is an essential priority. It enables visibility over where and why bottlenecks are occurring, making it much easier to find effective solutions more quickly and implement the necessary optimizations. This then allows for continuous improvement, helping project managers streamline how they deal with future bottlenecks as well.
